In Memory

Sad news to share. My step-dad died yesterday. He was quite ill and his last few months were very difficult, so I'm thankful that he's no longer in pain. It's very surreal when someone you've known for nearly your whole life is suddenly no longer there- even when you know the end is coming. He dearly loved the outdoors, especially the time he spent in Maine. So I remember him tonight with an excerpt from one of my favorite poems.

1938-2010

I'd like to go by climbing a birch tree
And climb black branches up a snow-white trunk
Toward heaven, till the tree could bear no more,
But dipped its top and set me down again.
That would be good both going and coming back.
One could do worse than be a swinger of birches.
